SAMANTHA'S PAGE

Samatha (Sami) has been rehomed here to Kalan Akitas.  Sami was purchased by the man who used to be my daughter's trainer when she was riding horses.  This man had multiple akitas and purchased Samantha as a show prospect.  He knew I had previously shown dogs and since he didn't have time to show her himself, he asked me to start showing her.  I trained her for the show ring, took her to many match shows, classes and finally some point shows, but they tired of me taking her away so much and wanted her to stay home more.  Unfortunately, home was a large horse operation with no fences, kennels, etc.  When Sami starting running off and chasing wild things, they tied her up around the farm, which just broke my heart.  She was my first experience with an Akita, and I loved her very much, as did my daughter.  Before I bought my first Akita, she was just as much a part of our lives and she was life at the farm, maybe even more because when she was with us, she had 100% of our love and attention and she was always safe.

Periodically, they would let her run loose again and during one of these times, she was running loose with the other 'farm dogs' while the owners were not at home.  At the same time, the other tenants on the farm had left there dogs loose outside and gone away.  When the people returned, one of the neighbor's dogs was dead and Sami had blood on her mouth and chest.  So...I get the panicked call "...find her a home today or she's going to be put down..."  Well,  I'm sure you can guess where she found that new home.  My daughter says it was fate and that she was meant to be with us.  I tend to agree with her since we were in the process of selling our house and would have been moving away from her and not get to keep an eye on her at all.

So...here she is and here she'll stay.  Unfortunately, she does not like my other female, so we live in a gated community and when we fenced in the new property, we built two yards so that all the dogs can have separate outside areas to play in too.

Sami never looks for a fight.  Unless she is cornered or finds herself face to face with another dog she is perfectly happy just to stay away.  At the 2004 Akita National Specialty in Rhode Island, Sami got her CGC and was even used as the 'greet a stranger' dog for many of the others trying to get their CGCs.  Quite an accomplishment for a dog with 'social' issues.
